Roque de Balduque, Main Altarpiece of Cáceres Cathedral: Detail, The Battle of Clavijo and Joachim Meets Anne at the Golden Gate

1547-51
Cáceres, Extramadura, Spain

The type of image seen on the left is known as Santiago Matamoros, "St. James the Moor-killer." In the legendary Battle of Clavijo (834 or 844) the Christian Asturians were said to be encouraged by a vision of St. James the Greater on horseback attacking the Moors.

On the right is another common image: In separate visions an angel has told St. Joachim and St. Anne to come to Jerusalem's Golden Gate. There they embrace under the aegis of the angel.

These two panels are in the left lower register of the altarpiece.
